Outer Hebridean Hike

Outer Hebridean Hike (EXAHL)

Duration: 4 days (may vary)
Areas: Scotland
Tour types: Short Breaks, Walking & Trekking

Description

Isle of Lewis
After departing Inverness we travel to Ullapool for the evening ferry to Stornoway via a short walk around the Corrieshalloch Gorge which boasts a 40 metre waterfall. We may see porpoises, dolphins or even whales which swim through The Minch during the journey. Once on the Isle of Lewis, you are free to dine in one of the local restaurants or discover the delights of this island. The following day involves a trip to Great Bernera, an island attached to Lewis by a bridge where we enjoy a circular walk around the island with its white beaches, Bosta Iron Age village and tremendous views along the Lewis Coastline. On our return journey to Stornoway we visit Callanish Standing Stones and meet Callum and Angus for a weaving demonstration on the old loom and the chance to try the weaving for yourself.

Isle of Harris
The following day starts with a drive south to the Isle of Harris where we hike either to the top of Clisham, the highest peak in the Western Isles or follow the old green road from Rhenigidale to the deserted village of Molinginish. After a short walk to Rogie Falls on the mainland, the journey finishes in Inverness where you can be dropped off at the bus and train station or at the airport (upon request). Easyjet and Flybe/British Airways fly to Inverness from London Gatwick, Luton, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Introduction

The Outer Hebrides at the edge of Northwest Europe offers beautiful rugged landscapes including great views of the Torridon and Inverpoly mountains and the surrounding countryside. There is the possibility of seeing marine life swimming through the channels and to spend time in the lively town of Stornoway which is our base for the trip, where Lewis Castle overlooks the harbour that is still lined with fishing boats. The islands are home to Iron Age fortifications, pristine white beaches and breathtaking panoramic views, a great place to unwind in peaceful and unspoilt surroundings.
