Description

Most expeditions to the polar regions unfold where the sun never sets, so there is seldom an opportunity to watch an aurora dance in the night sky. The exception is this voyage, where a portion occurs well below the Arctic Circle at the southern tip of Greenland, affording the best chance to observe the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. The islands visited during this expedition range from the largest in the Canadian Arctic - Baffin Island - through the world's largest - Greenland - to an island bubbling with geo-thermal activity - Iceland. With such diversity found in both the landscape and culture amongst these three islands, and with the chance of witnessing the Aurora Borealis, this voyage is a unique and exciting Arctic adventure.  

Tour itinerary

Day 1:

Start Rekjavik, night in hotel.

Day 2:

Board the ship and begin exploration.

Day 3:

Transit the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland.

Day 4:

Land at Tasiilaq on Ammassalik Island, with excellent hiking opportunities.

Day 5:

Bernstorfs Isfjord; search for newly minted glaciers.

Day 6:

Visit the southern tip of Greenland; watch out for Aurora Borealis.

Day 7:

At sea; cross the Arctic Circle.

Day 8:

Visit the capital of Greenland, Nuuk.

Day 9:

Land at Sisimiut.

Day 10:

Cruise Ilulissat Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 11:

Baffin Bay

Day 12:

Isabella Bay; visit Igaliqtuuq National Wildlife Area.

Day 13-14:

Broughton Island

Day 15:

Pangnirtung; visit the Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts.

Day 16:

Visit Monumental Island, a well known walrus habitat.

Day 17:

Disembark Iqaluit; fly to Ottawa, night in hotel.

Day 18:

End Ottawa.
