Responsible Travel
We support the orphanage school in Bwindi, which was founded six years ago and operates solely on donations. You will have the opportunity to visit the school and see how they are progressing. If you would like to offer your support by taking a gift they would be delighted to receive any books or learning equipment, they have very little resources here at all but you will see a strong determination and great joy for life! The younger children are particularly short of early learning books and would be delighted for anything to help them as they begin to learn to read. Previous visitors have provided roofing tin for a new brick building. Their latest project is for a dining room, so children can have breakfast at school before starting their classes.
Funds raised by gorilla permits aid conservation of the mountain gorilla and contribute to maintenance of the National Parks. A percentage of Park entrance fees is donated to local communities.
On our reforestation project in Kibale National Park in Uganda we have now planted 140 hectares of forest. We have recently commissioned a further 66 hectares of planting. The seedlings of 20 local species of trees are being prepared in the nursery right now, as it is a wet time of year. They will be planted out during the next wet period in October 2005. When planting out, the miscanthus elephant grass that has invaded the area must be cut by hand and then cut back two to three times a year until the canopy is established. We have heard that primates are now moving into the original areas that were replanted in 1995, and we hope that in time the Climate Care areas will also be host to primates - of which there are 13 varieties in the park, including chimpanzees. About 200 long haul flights (200 passengers) will be offset by a hectare of forest when it is fully grown.
