Adventure Level
The itinerary on this trip has been specifically designed with the needs of teenagers in mind. It features more adventurous activities that are only suitable for older children and adults. As with our other Family Adventures, under 18’s must be accompanied by at least one adult. You may also like to have a look at our other Family Adventures which have ‘Teenage Departures’ – dates set aside for families with older children. Minimum age: 12 years.
Anyone in good health who enjoys being active should be able to take part in this trip. It can be hot and humid in Turkey, especially in the summer months and so active pursuits will feel more tiring. An ability to swim is essential.
Climate
Southern Turkey has a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers. Temperatures range from 29-34?C Jul-Oct, and occasionally go as high as 45?C! The best time to visit is late summer as temperatures start to drop and the sea is at its warmest. Spring is also beautiful with the hillsides green after winter rains. The sea remains cold until the middle of May. Rain can be expected at any time of the year – even mid-summer (though it is rare!). Altitude causes variations in temperature and rainfall. Responsible Travel
Lots of people benefit from our stay - our Turkish local agents, the hotel we use, restaurants we eat in along with our Turkish Group Leader, drivers, gulet crew etc. This spreads the money we spend amongst many different people and provides vital employment. Our interest in the sea life (SCUBA diving) reinforces amongst local people the need to protect and preserve these environments.
For every person travelling on this trip, The Adventure Company will donate £2 to a carbon offset programme. More details can be found on our website.
Since the increase in popularity of bottled water, many countries are experiencing a problem of litter especially where adequate recycling is not available. Please could you try, where possible, to use purification tablets or filters for water or buy bigger bottles of water between group members and decant into your individual water bottles.
The Turkish Gulet
The traditional gulet is based on a design tried and tested over many centuries. The methods used to build the boats have changed little over the centuries. The changes to the basic plank-on-frame method are superficial; electrical tools now allow craftsman to sand and shape wood faster and with more precision than they used to be able to by hand.
Inside the boat, design changes over the years have increasingly opted for larger dining and lounging facilities and better cabin layout. The cargo hold below deck, where amphoras of wine were once neatly stacked in the ancient vessels of the Aegean, now hold a powerful engine, to enable sailing on days of little wind.
Most boats are built without the aid of specific plans. Construction requires working on several tasks and attending to numerous details at once. At the shore before launching, boats undergo a christening ceremony, but instead of a bottle of champagne smashed against the bow, a sheep or steer is sacrificed in accordance with Muslim custom, and the blood smeared on the bow to ensure good luck and safe voyages!
You will be roomed in a twin or double cabin with en-suite facilities. There is also usually a shared kitchen and refrigerator, and plenty of room for the group to relax under a covered area with mattresses. A voyage along what is some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful coastline on these beautiful ancient vessels is the perfect way to relax.
